Special talk and grant announcement: Prof. John Martinis (Qolab)

Abstract

Nobel laureate Prof. John Martinis, co-founder and CTO of Qolab, joined AQC26 remotely from South Africa to open Day 3. He examined the trade-offs between qubit modalities and asked a pointed question: does speed matter? Using quantum chemistry as a business case, he showed how a quantum computer’s logical clock rate directly shapes whether it can be commercially viable, and argued that fast superconducting qubits must also scale at low cost. He then outlined Qolab’s approach to scaling: wafer-scale integration that moves wiring, control and measurement on-chip, with partners including Quantum Machines, Applied Materials, Western Digital and SkyWater, aiming at roughly 100,000 qubits in a single dilution refrigerator. The talk closed with the first awardees of the John Martinis Grant, a research program run by Qolab and the Israeli Quantum Computing Center (IQCC): Anastasia Shernikova (CU Boulder and NIST), studying how charge-parity switching affects fast qubit reset, and Mia Reynolds, applying microwave engineering to reduce leakage and crosstalk in qubit control.
